Growing Up in the Burren
Síle grew up in Doolin, County Clare, where the Cliffs of
Moher and Burren landscape became her second home from
childhood. She spent countless hours exploring limestone
pathways, learning which routes were gentle enough for
families and which demanded serious fitness. Those early years
gave her an intimate knowledge of the terrain — every fold,
every rest spot, every viewpoint that takes your breath away.
Education & Early Career
After completing her environmental management degree at
University College Cork in 2008, Síle initially worked with
Tourism Ireland. But she quickly realised her true passion
wasn't in office work — it was in getting people safely
outdoors. She pursued postgraduate training in gerontology and
outdoor education at Limerick Institute of Technology,
understanding that older adults have specific needs and
capabilities that most trail guides simply didn't address.
The Turning Point
From 2008 to 2014, Síle spent her first five years conducting
detailed accessibility audits of local walking routes. She
identified which paths suited different mobility levels, where
handholds were needed, which sections had adequate rest areas.
This wasn't just paperwork — she walked every route herself,
often multiple times in different seasons and weather
conditions. Her comprehensive guide to rest areas and gentle
trails became the turning point. Several local tourism boards
adopted her recommendations, and suddenly seniors across Clare
and Galway had reliable information about exploring safely.
Current Work & Impact
Today, Síle works directly with community groups, care
facilities, and individual seniors to ensure that age and
physical limitations never become barriers to experiencing the
Burren's unique biodiversity and the dramatic beauty of the
Cliffs. She's guided over 3,000 seniors safely through these
landscapes. Her approach combines practical safety protocols —
understanding balance issues, cardiovascular capacity, joint
limitations — with something equally important: she recognises
that nature connection significantly improves mental and
physical wellbeing in older adults. She's particularly driven
by ensuring that seniors have the knowledge and confidence to
explore these landscapes independently or with friends.
